The Daily Telegraph in Australia was never respected by me. When someone I respect linked me to an article they were outraged about I had a look. A quick look at the various articles showed a 8:1 bias towards the right. So I though it was crap but now it is right wing crap.
Not only that but the people commenting on the posts seem to be mostly right wing absolutists as well. I suppose they have to keep pandering to this audience or absolutely no one would buy there paper.
Here as an example in an unsupportable comment, in response to the Labor/Greens carbon tax;

Economic suicide. By imposing this on a nation that contributes a minuscule amount of pollution compared to the rest of the world will only have the effect of encouraging businesses to not invest in Australia anymore and go elsewhere, everything will become more expensive and encourage citizens to go elsewhere, and handouts to help the poor people will encourage more middle income earners to become poor. Idiotic decision!! Labor never thinks of the long-term ramifications of any decision.
The one particular demonstration of ignorance is “a nation that contributes a minuscule amount of pollution compared to the rest of the world“, of course the writer is possibly aware of the fact that we were the second most highest emitter per capita in the world, and we just graduated to the the highest. So I expect he says this because we are only a small country. What this statement shows is the writer thinks only absolute emissions, as assigned to the perfectly artificial, nation state boarders, is somehow a true representation of statistics – i-diot. Not withstanding that, his argument ignores the consequences of the thing he is minimising, for example if Australia has the highest per capita rate of nose picking in public, perhaps we would get less tourists, but otherwise that is something we can live with. What if Australia (with 40 million) had the highest per capita murder rate ?, would it be OK if despite this we did not murder as many people every year as was in the US with there population of 300million ?
The rest of this fellows post is just unmitigated crap, this includes the use of the word “never”, in his misunderstanding that people will stop dealing with us if we have a tax on carbon when the reverse may be true – they will stop dealing with us if we don’s put a price on carbon. Just look at the move to forest certification by the Australian forestry industry.
And as a final statement to show he is an economic rationalist neoconservative capitalist he says “handouts to help the poor people will encourage more middle income earners to become poor” by what mechanism, economic rationalist or otherwise – idio-t
